Volunteering in Sekurau Atas

Last sunday, November 13, 2011, I was invited to participate in a volunteer service organized by the KPC’s Christian organization. The service was held in Sekurau Atas, an area 3hours driving away from Sangatta. The way wasn’t well polished yet so it was kinda off road driving. Very tiring. And when we arrived there, there’s not much dental case anyway. šŸ˜¦

But the important thing I want to share is the picture of their life there. Well, I’ve been told before that there’s some remote area, untouchable by the governmentĀ service, kinda uncivilized, very poor, bad hygiene, etc… I’ve read and seen so many pictures too about life in the remote area. But the real thing that I got in Sekurau Atas was even much worse than what I’ve thought before. Yes they’re uncivilized. They got so many cases of skin problems. I was told that they use the river water for everything, clean up themselves, washing clothes and so on. The water was completely poluted, not clear at all, moreover it was colored brown too. Mr Kuntadi, our filing man told me that the water might be poluted by the mercury as well. No wonder they have so many skin problems there. The adults know nothing about contraception, they are poor but they have so many children. I can see that even both of the parents and the children have malnutrition problem. šŸ˜¦

That was a very great experience that we can have there. It made us much more grateful than ever with our own life.
